NARANAG

NARANAG: – “HERITAGE AND NATURE” A way from the hustle bustle one feels close to the nature after visiting a beautiful landscape known as naranag. Though it is one of the lesser visited place among the tourist destinations in Kashmir, but one who visit the place will love to visit again. A distance of nearly 50 kms from Srinagar, naranag mesmerizes tourists with its scenic meadows, dense forests, a river flowing alongside the spot. Naranag is one of the best bases for trekking and adventure tours, from this place one can walk and trek to famous Gangabal Lake. Tall trees and dense forests welcome the visitors which accompany them to the naranag. The road leading to naranag is about 20 kms uphill drive in a zigzag shape from preng (a village on sgr-leh highway).

You will also see the people mostly Gujjar wearing the traditional turbans as the area is a Gujjar dominant area. As on reaching at the base are remains of ancient temples built with large granite blocks. The monument looks fascinating with huge rock blocks resting over one another. The temple complex is believed to be ancient monuments dedicated to the deity Shiva. There is a stream that flows beside the monuments, fed by glaciers and the Gangabal Lake situated high up in the mountains. The beauty of naranag lies in the fact that it is desolate, except for the luxuries of nature. As you ascend, there is tranquility and even the murmur of stream vanishes at many places.

A couple of private hotels have come up here which provide accommodation to visitors wishing to stay for some days. Jammu and Kashmir tourism department has also constructed a guest house here for the convenience of the visitor. Travelers often carry their tents and other equipments as most of them are interested to go way up. The trek from sonmarg to gangabal, culminating at naranag is very popular. There are innumerable places which are not lesser in beauty than fantasy lands. Clear water lakes. On top of the mountains reflecting perfectly all the shades of blue sky over it is simple magical. The J&K government particularly the tourism department needs much work to upgrade the infrastructure and to bring the naranag on tourist map.
